Meharu has worked as a freelance remote worker for 3 years after 4-year experience as a software engineer. She has signed up UpWork in 2013 and started to work in 2015. It was very highly competitive to get good work in it since there were thousands of potential applicants in UpWork and hundreds of them might have similar or same skill sets. The clients needed evidence of the good quality of work to hire good workers. To show the evidence, it was important to polish the profiles, improve portfolios and increase own skills.
As for tips for the beginners in UpWork, he/she should not apply for a big job offer but start from small one and got good reviews, Meharu said. Once the freelancer got a good review and trust, he/she might meet another good job in UpWork.
Be honest to the client, report your situation even in an emergency
As a remote worker, you might face an emergency situation, for example, you got sick or your family members got some problems. It might happen to everyone. In the case, do not lie, and be honest to the clients. The freelancers needed to communicate with the clients proactively, not passively. You had responsibility a part of the client’s project or development and if you run away or gave up the tasks, the clients might get damages. You needed to communicate with the clients daily and try to go through the difficult phase over with them.
