Interview for an Indian freelancer Meharu by Daisuke, the multi-language translation apps developer
Remote work opens up a lot of opportunities for women. Daisuke, the developer of Kiara, a Slack bot with real-time translation in 100 Languages, interviewed Meharu, a freelancer from India.
Remote work frees us from traffic jams and produces more working time
Remote work frees us from traffic jams.
For example, it takes around 4 hours per day to commute in India because of traffic jams. Overcrowded early morning trains trouble commuters in Tokyo, Japan.
If people work from home, they could use these hours to produce something and also be free from the stress of the rush.
Flexibility is the biggest benefit of remote work
According to the interviewee, as a woman, she has extra responsibilities such as caring for children and family members. Therefore, flexibility is necessary to handle irregular daily tasks. If working from home, she could deal with family tasks during the day and come back to work at night.
In India, the focus isn’t as sharp on the “kind” of jobs. What matters most is flexibility. The most popular work for freelancers is data entry, or translation if they have the required set of skills.
Need supports from family, clients, and systems
Meharu said that 2 or 3 out of 10 women* in India work as freelancers. However, about half of them struggle to find jobs or have difficulties in getting their family members to understand. She said she was lucky because her family supports her decision, she has good clients, and supportive systems such as Upwork. Without these supports, it is very challenging to work as an independent freelancer.
